Eye, Vision, Perception

Optical-Illusion-8

Perception which takes place in the brain, is the process of organizing, interpreting, and giving meaning to that raw data in order to understand what is going on around us. Gestalt theory try’s to explain how the brain organises what it sees into groups, patterns and fills in the things we see.   This allows us to interpret the information completely without unneeded repetition.  For example, when you see one dot, you perceive it as such, but when you see five dots together, you group them together by saying a “row of dots.”  Without this tendency to group our perceptions, that same row would be seen as “dot, dot, dot, dot, dot,” taking both longer to process and reducing our perceptive ability.  The Gestalt principles of grouping include four types: similarity, proximity, continuity, and closure.

Gestalt

Rods – do not see the colour of light at all but are very sensitivity to the intensity of light. This is called our scotopicvision, The rods response  of blue colours  is sharper than the red.

Cones – give us the ability to distinguish color (photopic vision), saturation, and to a lesser extent intensity of lightnight. The Cones are located in the Fovea and have a quicker response to light and changes. Our cones are red, green and blue. Your eyes always take longer to adjust to the dark than light. It can be up to 30mins

The opponent colour theory explains how the cones are all interconnected and explains the complementary afterimages.

Additive colour mixing RGB

Colour mixing Addative and Subtractive. This is going to take me a bit to get right – I keep thing of mixing pigments but it is so different. Below are a couple images from the in class session.

This is another beautiful installation by the United Visual Artists team. The changing patterns of colour, light and shadow on the surface make this installation appear to continual moving.

Ok, just wanted to put at least a couple of the master of illusionist drawings MC Ecsher! There were a couple on the wall in my maths classes in high school and I think I spent too much time staring at the drawings than I did paying attention to the teacher! Check out the video to see a 3d printed version of the Belvedere.
